A twin sleep schedule is really two schedules that you are gently trying to bring together. The good news is that both babies move through the same broad stages, so the shape of the day is predictable even when the two of them are not. The trick is to anchor everything to age-appropriate wake windows rather than the clock.

A wake window is simply how long a baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps. Push past it and you get an overtired baby who fights sleep; stop short and they will not settle. These windows stretch as babies grow - here is roughly how, and how to use them for two.

Wake windows by age

  • Newborn (0-3 months): about 45-90 minutes awake, with sleep scattered across day and night. Do not expect a schedule yet - expect a rhythm.
  • 3-6 months: roughly 1.5-2.5 hours, settling into three or four naps.
  • 6-9 months: around 2-3 hours, usually two solid naps.
  • 9-12 months: about 3-4 hours, often still two naps.
  • 12-18 months: 4-6 hours as the morning nap drops and one longer midday nap takes over.

Treat these as starting points, not rules. Every baby - and every twin - runs a little faster or slower.

Getting two babies onto one schedule

With twins, the aim is not identical timing to the minute. It is enough overlap that you get blocks of time with nobody awake. A few moves make that far more likely:

  • Wake the sleeper. If one twin wakes to feed, gently wake the other within 20-30 minutes so their days do not drift apart.
  • Feed both together. Anchoring feeds to the same times pulls the naps that follow into alignment.
  • Cap the last nap. A late catnap for one baby is what wrecks a shared bedtime.
  • Follow the tired one. When windows differ, base the nap on whoever tires first, and let the other rest a little early.

You are not syncing a clock. You are nudging two rhythms until they overlap enough to give you a break.
